The President, National Flag, Coat of Arms & National Anthem

The President

The Executive power is held by the President who is elected by direct popular vote for 5 years. The winning candidate in Presidential elections must receive no less that 25% of the votes in at least five of Kenya's eight Provinces.

The current President H.E. Mr. Mwai Kibaki came into office in December, 2002, and is serving his second term following the 2007 Presidential elections.

In 2008, the Kenya Constitution was amended to provide for a Coalition Government and create the post of Prime Minister.  The Rgt. Hon. Raila Odinga is the current Prime Minister.

The Kenyan National Flag

The colours:
Black
represents the people of Kenya.
Red represents the blood shed in the fight for independence.
Green represents the fertility of the land. White represents peace.

The Kenyan Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Kenya features two lions holding Maasai spears and a shield. The shield contains the national colours.

The shield and lions stand on a silhouette of Mount Kenya containing in the foreground examples of Kenya's agricultural produce - coffee, pyrethrum, sisal, tea, maize and pineapples.

The coat of arms is supported by scrolls with the word HARAMBEE - pulling together.

KISWAHILI LYRICS

ENGLISH LYRICS

Ee Mungu nguvu yetu Ilete baraka kwetu Haki iwe ngao na mlinzi Natukae na undugu Amani na uhuru Raha tupate na ustawi.

Amkeni ndugu zetu Tufanye sote bidii

O God of all creation Bless this our land and nation Justice be our shield and defender May we dwell in unity Peace and liberty Plenty be found within our borders.

Let one and all arise With hearts both strong and true Service be our earnest endeavour And our homeland of Kenya Heritage of splendour Firm may we stand to defend.

Let all with one accord In common bond united Build this our nation together And the glory of Kenya The fruit of our labour
Fill every heart with thanksgiving.
